White is for Magic Pg. 125-152

By: Laurie Faria Stolarz
Summary:
Stacey returns to her dorm and Chad is waiting with wildflowers even though it is after hours. Stacey then notices a frowning jealous Drea on the other side of the room. The finally set a real date after the meeting with the mystery man. Stacey goes to bed then wakes up and no one is awake. She brushes it off and goes outside. She finds everyone dressed in black and a banner that says IN LESS THAN ONE WEEK, STACEY BROWN, YOU'LL BE BEGGING TO DIE. The mystery man comes and hands Stacey a origami snake and whispers to her "I know how you'll be spending your anniversary". She really wakes up then and pukes.

Stacey immediately runs outside but there is no banner. Amber, Drea, and Stacey head back to their dorm but are stopped by Cory, their computer friend, and his buddy leaving Trish and Emma's room. They finally leave and Stacey spots an enveloppe and a tape recorder. Inside the enveloppe is an origami snake and the snake says IN LESS THAN ONE WEEK, STACEY BROWN, YOU'LL BE BEGGING TO DIE. The tape recorder is a child singing a new version of Miss Mary Mack.

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black.
She has all buttons, buttons, buttons
straight now her back, back, back.
She cannot read, read, read.
She cannot write, write, write.
That's why she smokes, smokes, smokes,
her father's pipe, pipe, pipe...

Stacey knows the recording is professional not Maura. On the label it read I'M WATCHING YOU. Drea comments on it because it was Donovan's catchphrase. It is not the mystery man but someone else. Amber and Drea want to go to the mystery man metting with Stacey but Stacey won't allow it. She doesn't even want to tell Chad.

Response:
Stacey's dreams are coming true in a very specific way. It is creepy to know someone has been in your room without permission. What does it all mean. The origami snake is puzzling me. I understand the other song. Her begging to die like in the note. But this song makes to sense. Why is she smoking? What do snakes represent? Well I looked it up here at Dreams & Nightmares. They represent death and evil. Go figure she is going to beg to die in less than a week. How specific. At least drea knew her day.

So I tried to find the real version of Miss Mary Mack. It is pretty close to what the book says. I have to say whoever came up with it is disturbed.

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons
All down her back, back, back.
She cannot read, read, read
She cannot write, write, write
But she can smoke, smoke, smoke
Her father's pipe, pipe, pipe
She asked her mother, mother, mother
For 50 cents, cents, cents
To see the elephants, elephants, elephants
Jump over the fence, fence, fence.
They jumped so high, high, high
They reached the sky, sky, sky
And they didn't come back, back, back
'Til the 4th of July, ly, ly!
July can't walk, walk, walk
July can't talk, talk, talk
July can't eat, eat, eat
With a knife and fork, fork, fork!
She went up stairs, stairs, stairs
To say her prayers, prayers, prayers
And bumped her head, head, head
And now she's dead, dead, dead
